Frequently Asked Questions

How do I become a volunteer?

You will need to complete our application process and provide two satisfactory references. Depending on the role we may also need to carry out a Disclosure and Barring check (DBS). The application process usually takes between 2 and 8 weeks.

For more information about volunteering please call our Volunteer Coordinator on 01494 552 750 or email us at volunteer@sbhospice.org.uk.

Do I need particular skills or experience?

It depends what you are volunteering for. If you are applying to be a driver, then you will need a full UK driving licence and access to a car. Otherwise, all you need is people skills and a willingness to help a worthy cause.

How regularly do I have to volunteer?

We ask all our volunteers to commit to us for a minimum of 3 months. We usually ask for a weekly commitment but this will vary depending on the role. Of course, if you are unable to continue to commit to this, we will do all we can to accommodate you.

Is there a minimum and maximum age limit?

You must be over 16 to volunteer in our hospice and over 14 to volunteer in our retail shops. For volunteer drivers you must be aged between 25 and 75 due to insurance restrictions.

Will it cost me anything?

No. All reasonable costs incurred can be reimbursed. To do this, you will need to complete an expenses form.

I recently lost a loved one, may I volunteer?

To volunteer in our hospice we need to make sure you are ready to work closely with our patients, families and carers and so we usually ask you to wait two years after the bereavement before you can apply to our day services department. However, we always have volunteering opportunities in our retail and fundraising operations and you can apply for these as soon as you feel ready to do so.

I need work experience. How do I apply for this specifically?

Please just go through the same process, but mention this on your application.
