Volunteer

Why we need help

90% of our staff are volunteers. We value and welcome them for the help and the caring they give our patients. They provide a vital service and contribute to the running of the Hospice in several ways. But we need more volunteers to expand our patient care. If you think you might be able to help in a practical way, have a skill, time, energy, enthusiasm, or are looking for something different to do, we would like to hear from you.

What does it involve?

Having been asked to write a short article about being a volunteer, made me think what can I say to make other people come along & help. So I thought back to things I have been involved with and what they meant to me. The Worlds largest Tombola came to mind, running around the Town Hall on a Friday night trying to set that up was an experience. Sponsored walks, sitting around in the sun in beautiful Hughenden Park handing out walking instructions and taking money. Running a bar at a function or selling raffle tickets and chatting to our really nice supporters. Running a tombola stall while the Knicker lady gave a really funny talk. Okay, I have to add standing with a can outside a supermarket for an hour or two on a Saturday, and yes it can rain, and you can be invisible to people, but we get some money and more importantly sometimes, people realise who The South Bucks Hospice are. Add to that sheltering under a gazebo while the rain tried to dampen our garden party this year, (it didn’t succeed). The funny thing is when I think of all this, I think of all the laughs we have – even when things go wrong, we band of volunteers can laugh, joke and have a good time. So maybe that’s the message I want to pass on, yes it’s a really good idea to use your skills, be it cake making, administration, an idea’s person, or most importantly just some of your valuable time. We all have something we can offer to help others, and we know what vital work this Hospice does, and why we need to raise lots of money each year. However why not join us in doing all of that and have some fun at the same time. You can do as much or as little as you like, the Hospice will appreciate whatever you have to offer. Why not try it, after all they say “Laughter is the best medicine”
